It takes a village to raise a child.

African proverb

We all have an innate desire for meaningful relationships, and in a world that moves at warp speed, we owe it to our children and each other to slow down in full presence with each other at every chance we get and to develop genuine connection between generations. Let’s build the village for our community together.

In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Helene, something beautiful emerged among the grief and suffering.

Neighbors came together, sharing resources without hesitation, helping each other without question, and leaning into the community and onto each other for support and connection.

Our community thrives when we all show up for each other.

“There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

Little Field School was founded in 2024 with the intent to hold sacred the transformative power of peace, unity, and mutual respect that emerged following Hurricane Helene.

Hi, I’m Liza Kelly. I am the founding teacher of Little Field School, which is borne out of a decade of intermittent planning between multi-year stints of teaching at schools that were all alike in their approach to educating the whole child.

I have been privileged to teach in Reggio Emilia, Waldorf-influenced, and Montessori schools throughout my career; Little Field School’s curriculum is influenced by the aspects of each philosophy with which I have resonated and those that I feel are best able to equip each child for a deep love of learning and curiosity that lasts a lifetime.

With the steadfast, gentle presence of community members who come to share their passions with us and guide us toward discovery, bringing with them opportunities for intergenerational friendship and connection, our children grow in the comfort of belonging and a strong sense of community.

I am grateful to have called Asheville home since 2011. My partner, Ken (also a career educator!) and I live in North Asheville with our three daughters and two dogs.

Thank you for being here, taking a few minutes out of your day to learn about Little Field School and a little about me and my family. I can’t wait to know you - please reach out!
